How adoptables work

I have had so many people ask me about this, even though I've actually only made adoptables for sale twice during my 5 years on DeviantART.
Anyways I wouldn't say there is a specific way adorables need to work, I think that it is up to the artist really, but here are a few of the most common questions asked regarding adorables.

1.How do adoptables work?
Well they work in a few different ways, but the jist of it is that basically, you draw a few characters (your own work of course) and sell the characters design to others. You can either auction your characters, or make a set price for each of your adoptables you want to sell. When someone buys one, you send the characters image you have drawn to the buyer.

2. How does the buyer receive the adorable they have bought?
The most common methods is to send a large drawing of the character the buyer has bought by email, or a photo sharing site such as photobucket. I would recommend sending the drawing by photobucket if you don't want to disclose your email address, or make a separate email address for commissions/adorable sales. Photobucket or other photo sharing sites are usually used when the buyer doesn't want to give you an email address. So artists will copy the direct link to the image and note the customer the link.

3. How much should I charge for my adoptables?
There is no right answer to this question. You should charge what you think is fair for your work. However I really do want to cry when I see someone selling a character design for $5, it breaks my heart! Please people when you are creating prices for adorables please don't sell yourself short. You took the time to draw these characters, you worked hard, don't give things away!

4. What are the rules?
The most common rules for adorables are as follows, but feel free to make your own rules! There are no set rules for adoptables per say.
So these are the most common rules:
  • No changing the design of the adoptable once bought, or without the artists permission
  • No re-selling the character after you have bought it
  • No using the character or drawing for profit (for example, on merchandise)
  • No claiming the character as your own, or that you designed it
  • Credit must be given to the artist who drew the adorable
  • Payment should be received within 24 hours

5. How do people buy adoptables?
Well that depends on what kind of payment you are looking to receive. If you are looking for money as payment then a paypal account is required, this is the only way to do things money related on DeviantART the reason for this is that its SAFE. Once the buyer has decided they want the adoptable, you should contact them about payment, and give your paypal address so they can pay you. You then accept there payment on paypal and there you have it! The money is yours.
If you are looking for DeviantART points as payment its the same process, the buyer says they want to buy the adorable from you, you then message the buyer regarding payment and they send you the Deviantart points. Very simple!

So these are the frequently asked questions I have received regarding adoptables, Hope you found this helpful. Please feel free to comment below if you have any further questions.
